Exploring The World Of Handcrafted Furniture Construction

Hi there! The name is Nicky and I'm here to present the fascinating world of furniture construction to you. Modern furniture comes from a long line of handcrafted items that have recently fallen out of favor. I grew up in a quirky household where we created all of our own furniture by hand. I have fond memories of shaping wood on the lathe for table and couch legs before I could even ride a bike. Today I continue to create furniture using all of the skills I learned from my awesome parents. I would like to share the knowledge I've collected over the years with you to help expand this interesting hobby. My main goal is to see handmade furniture secure its place in the marketplace. I hope you learn all you need to know about techniques, tools and building materials to create signature pieces you'll love for lifetime.

You will probably need to reseal your hardwood floor every 10 years. This is a pretty time-consuming project because you need to move all the furniture out of the room and sand down the floors. However, it is a good chance to overhaul the look of your floor and try something different.

How to Achieve an Authentic Distressed Look

The key to achieving a distressed look that does not look manufactured is to make it look random. If you leave behind patterns that look consistent, it will not look natural. To do this you should use a bunch of random tools and techniques. This ends up being a fun project as you experiment with your floor.

Some Great Items to Distress Your Floor

The first thing to do when antiquing your floor is to sand off the existing stain. However, do not sand off the floor consistently. In some areas you could leave a bunch of old stain on the floor, on another part you could sand off the stain completely. If you sand sporadically, you will not leave behind any patterns.

You can also set various metal items onto your floor and them hammer them down to create unique markings. A set of old keys will leave a random mark that looks unique each time. Also, try setting some rough sandpaper face down on the floor and then striking it at different angles. This leaves behind a different mark each time. A sharp flathead screwdriver can be used to randomly scratch the floor. Just bend over and take a few stabs at your floor!

As you try more different objects, you will find certain marks that you like more than others. The best part about giving your hardwood floor a distressed finish is that there is no right or wrong way to do it. You can make your floor look truly unique by doing it your own way.
